YANGON DIVISION – Thura U Tin Oo, a former chair of National League for Democracy (NLD) as well as a former military commander in chief has passed away around 8:45 a.m. on June 1 while hospitalised for bronchitis and age tested sickness at the age of 98, reported author Htin Lin Oo who was taking care of him.
“He was connected to a respirator and feeding tubes. As he was also pretty advanced in age, he probably could no longer overcome it,” said a NLD source.
Thura U Tin Oo, born on March 12, 1927, served as the military commander in chief from March 8, 1974 to March 6, 1976. One of the founders of NLD, he also took on the role of the chairman from December 3, 1988 to December 22, 1989.
He then became a patron of the NLD, becoming a retired military leader with an important role leading the party as well as an influential politician.
