KAYIN STATE – More than a year after the military coup, Shwe Kokko on the Burma-Thailand border, a Karen State Border Guard Force (BGF), under the auspices of the Military junta controlled area has become China’s economic capital.
Shwe Kokko is located north of Myawaddy on the banks of the Thaungyin (aka) Moei River on the Burma-Thailand border, about a 45-minute drive away from Myawaddy.
Shwe Kokko was just an ordinary military base camp about 10 years ago. Electricity and phone lines were purchased and used only form Thailand. The main currency used was the Thailand baht, which is now the Chinese yuan.
It was reported that there were three casinos over ten years ago. Civilians were banned from visiting the casinos. Only BGF leader Saw Chit Thu and leaders, rich guys of Thailand play the casinos, said locals.
Shwe Kokko New City project is a mega-project under construction as a partnership between Chit Lin Myaing Company and Yatai International Holdings Group (Yatai IHG), which is a Chinese-owned regional online gambling operation. They run their operations by registration as Myanmar Yatai International Holding Group Co.,Ltd. The project had also been criticized due to illegal constructions and gambling.
Although there was a rumor that the project has been linked to Chinese gangs, the Myanmar Investment Commission (MIC) has officially approved a $ 22.5 million investment in 25.5 acres of high-end single-family housings.
The Military Junta had covered the project while the NLD government tried to handle the project. And then, it has become like the capital of China more than a year after the military coup.
