MYANMAR – The military council announced that the passport will only be issued to those with a UID certificate.
The Passport Office of the junta council announced on March 19 that people will be required to bring a UID (Unique identity) certificate issued by the Ministry of Immigration and Manpower in order to verify whether a citizen is a citizen or not, and if they do not have one, they will not be issued a passport book.
“The UID certificate refers to the smart card that is made in the neighborhood. The eye scan, the fingerprint, and the phone number are registered,” said a person who has made a UID certificate.
People who have done the UID certificate said that they had to go to the township offices of the Ministry of Immigration and Population of their current residence and census register, and if the information is incorrect, it often takes time to prepare the certificate.
Since the coup d’état, there have been many people applying for passport, and after the Military Council implemented the conscription law, more and more people who want to leave the country are gathering at passport offices.
Currently, the online appointment system to apply for passport at the passport office in Yangon, has been fully booked till the end of September this year.
