Two pro-democracy activists were sentenced to long prison terms by Dawei Prison Court for resistance to junta rule.
The Dawei Prison Court sentenced Ko Wai Yan Kyaw to nine years in prison on December 9th and Ma Nyo Mar Oo to two years and six months on December 1st.
Ma Nyo Mar Oo was arrested in Dawei by junta troops on May 29th and charged with violating article 505/a.
Ko Wai Yan Kyaw was arrested with weapons at his house on June 10th according to a statement by the junta prosecutor.
He was charged under section 52(a) of the Counter-Terrorism Law.
“Those under arrest are accused of having weapons and received long prison sentences under Counter-Terrorism Law. Detained persons usually receive Counter-Terrorism charges. Ma Nyo Mar Oo was charged with article 505/a and sentenced two years and six months. Ko Wai Yan Kyaw was framed when arrested with weapons” said a spokesperson from the Dawei Political Prisoner Network.
It was reported that nearly 200 political prisoners have been detained in Dawei Prison.
