BAGO DIVISION – The villages beside the Sittaung River in Taungoo Township were affected by severe flooding on September 13 morning, trapping the residents and some civilians had to climb on top of trees.
“At Ashaytsin Village and Kanni, water entered the villages and some houses were swept away. Several people had to climb on top of trees and there have been requests for rescue. The water level of Sittaung River is still rising,” said a Taungoo based volunteer social worker.
In Taungoo Township, the water level of Sittaung River started rising on September 12 evening, surpassing the warning level by two and a half feet and is expected to rise by two more feet in the next 24 hours and remain above the warning level, according to the meteorological department. At Madauk Town, the water level of Sittaung River is two and a half feet above warning level and is expected to rise by another half a feet.
