MYANMAR – It was learned from the local people and volunteer groups that floods are occurring in Myawaddy, Keng Tung, Hopong, Tachileik and Kyaukse due to the rise of water level in rivers and streams as well as mountain water.
Myawaddy Township, Karen State at the Thai-Myanmar border, has been experiencing floods since the rise of the Thaungyin River on September 10. This is the second time of flooding and all the low-lying neighborhoods are flooded. A flood relief worker based in Myawaddy said that since there was a recent flood, the people have experience with the flood and evacuation, so they could move in time for rescue.
“The water is rising, but people have experience, so they are alert. Since there was a flood not too long ago, people in the lower areas also evacuated by themselves. Since there were two floods, the rescue workers continued to do what they had to do,” said a volunteer from Myawaddy.
At present, the water level of the Thaungyin River in Myawaddy Township has reached more than two feet above the warning level.
Similarly, in Shan State, floods are occurring in Tachilek, Keng Tung and Hopong. It is learned that bridge crossings are blocked due to floods at the Thai-Myanmar border town of Tachilek.
“The flooding of Mae Sai River has already submerged the bridge. The passage is closed. There is flooding on both the Thai and Myanmar sides. There is no electricity or phone lines. The flood is mainly due to the torrential rains and the rising of the stream due to the Ragi storm,” said a local resident of Tachilek.
Also, in Kyaukse Township, Mandalay Division, water has entered five low-lying neighborhoods due to the Zaw Gyi River flood.
