CHIN STATE-Due to a severe outbreak of dysentery in villages near Mindat Township, Chin State, which has resulted in fatalities, authorities have managed to contain the spread. However, to prepare for potential future outbreaks, Ko Yaw Man, the spokesperson for the Mindat Township People’s Administration, has called for donations of Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS).
“Unlike other diseases, dysentery can lead to rapid death if not treated promptly. By purchasing and preparing in advance, we can save lives and prevent further spread. Although we have controlled the outbreak, it can still resurface unexpectedly. This is why we are calling for donations to ensure timely treatment and life-saving measures for both our police and the public,” he said.
He reported that within the last month, severe dysentery struck over two hundred villages near Mindat Township, resulting in four deaths.
Despite the outbreak, lockdowns and quarantine measures in the villages have effectively contained the disease, he added.
“Dysentery can be fatal if fluids and salts are not replenished in time. Therefore, we urgently need a large supply of ORS packs,” the Mindat Township People’s Administration stated.
They are seeking donations of 20,000 packs of ORS, each costing 500 kyats, and have announced donation points, including their Facebook page.
