MYANMAR – If there is no progress on the implementation of the five ASEAN Consensus to resolve Myanmar, the junta council’s political representative will not be allowed to attend the ASEAN summits and related meetings, stated Retno Marsudi, the Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affair, Indonesia.
ASEAN banned the junta council’s military generals from attending ASEAN summits, Foreign Affair Ministers’ meetings and related meetings, only allowing non-political representatives to attend.
“There is no progress in the implementation of the five consensus. Moreover, if there is no improvement, we will have to maintain that only non-political representatives will be allowed to represent Myanmar in ASEAN summits and Foreign Affair ministers’ meetings,” said Retno Marsudi.
She continued that although the Myanmar representative who attended the ASEAN Foreign Affair ministers’ meeting said everything is okay, it is not the case on the ground.
After Mohamad Hasan, the Malaysia Foreign Affair Minister expressed his concern over the lack of negotiations in Myanmar, Maris Sangiampongsa, Thailand Foreign Affair Minister, revealed that he got the ASEAN’s support to play an important role regarding the negotiations in Myanmar.
