MYANMAR – An employment agency sending workers to Malaysia reported that the junta council banned Myanmar workers from travelling to work at palm plantations in Malaysia.
The junta Ministry of Labour reportedly notified the employment agencies to stop sending workers to work in plantations on the Sabah Island of Malaysia and to not accept recruitment notices.
“Palm plantations only pay a monthly salary of around 1,500 MYR. It is not enough. Most of the workers we sent ran away. For now, only the palm plantation jobs are banned. The other jobs are not affected,” explained an official from an employment agency.
It is said that very little labour from Myanmar is sent to Malaysia with especially the bilateral relations between the two countries worsening and little coordination between the Ministries from the two countries and the diplomatic relationship between Malaysia and the junta council is also on the cold end.
“The relationship between Myanmar and Malaysia turned cold since the military coup so not much labour was sent. Only an employment agency formed by a former military intelligence officer is mainly sending workers to Malaysia now. Even then, the number is extremely low. Most workers are headed to Thailand, Middle East, Laos, Japan, Singapore and South Korea,” said the official from an employment agency.
The terrorist junta council has also instructed employment agencies to ensure that the workers going overseas send back 25% of their salary to the country via bank transfer and to come back to serve in the military when drafted no matter which country the workers are sent to.
