MYANMAR – The defense and security meeting headed by the terrorist junta chief, who recently appointed himself the nominal president, extended the emergence period in the country by six more months for the seventh time since the military coup.
The July 31 meeting was headed by terrorist junta chief Min Aung Hlaing and attended by parliament chairman T Khun Myat, deputy junta chief Soe Win, junta defense minister Tin Aung San, state affairs minister Yar Pyae, border affairs minister Tun Tun Naung and guests, junta secretary Aung Lin Dwe and joint secretary Ye Win U.
The junta council stated that the junta chief clarified that he took the position of nominal president as Vice President Myint Swe, elected by the military, had to take medical leave to receive treatment.
The junta council had also retired Vice President Henry Van Thio in April for medical reasons.
Min Aung Hlaing then took the position of nominal president after retiring both vice presidents.
Although the junta regime is unable to hold elections even after three and a half years since the military coup, Min Aung Hlaing asked to extend the emergency period for six more months to prepare for elections, which was approved at the meeting.
Currently, the junta council is under attack by resistance forces across the country including Rakhine State, Kachin State, Karen State, Karenni State, Chin State, northern Shan State, Sagaing Division, and Magway Division, and is suffering defeat after defeat, having lost countless military bases, towns and territories.
Padoh Saw Taw Nee, the spokesperson for the Karen National Union remarked that even though the junta council is trying to hold elections in 2025, it is uncertain if the junta regime would still exist by then.
