MYANMAR- It was reported that a force of 35 officers and soldiers led by Major Aung Myo Thwin and a force of 26 led by Major Aung Ko Htwe entered CDM at the National Unity Government-NUG, Ministry of Defense. They were reportedly joining CDM as they no longer accept torture and killings of civilians by the junta regime.
The group of 35 junta troops; three officers, a policewoman, and 31 soldiers led by Major Aung Myo Thwin from Palatwa Town-based Platoons joined the civil disobedience movement (CDM) on the 8th January 2024. Another force of 26 led by Major Aung Ko Htwe, 3 officers and 23 soldiers, joined CDM on January 10 under the National Unity Government and took refuge in the people’s embrace.
“We have seen and heard of the Military Council’s unjustly seizing people’s power (staging coup), torturing and killing of civilians. Therefore, we joined the people’s embrace,” said the CDM Major Aung Myo Thwin.
Out of a total of 61 junta troops who took refuge in the people’s embrace, there were two Majors (Major Aung Myo Thwin and Major Aung Ko Htwe), 4 captains (Captain Zaw Min Thu, Captain Tun Tun, Captain Hein Latt, and Captain Kyaw Mhwe).
The junta officers and soldiers contacted the revolutionary forces including the Chinland Defense Force (CDF- Palatwa) and the People’s Defense Forces to join CDM under the National Unity Government, Ministry of Defense and stood for the people.
