BAGO DIVISION – Political prisoners who were transferred from Insein Prison to Tharyarwaddy Prison during June were subjected to torture, reported family members.
It is said that the political prisoners were made to sit in prison squat once they enter the prison and we’re beaten up for no reason.
The prison staff were reported to have cursed and scolded them, beat them with batons and rubber ropes, put them in shackles, and even placed at least three of the prisoners in solitary confinement.
“My son spoke out after seeing something unreasonable and the prison staff ganged up and beat him then placed him in solitary confinement,” said the mother of a political prisoner who is currently sentenced to life.
A former female political prisoner who was released from Tharyarwaddy Prison commented that the prison officers and staff there intentionally oppress and assault the political prisoners transferred there.
“Male political prisoners were beat up at the prison entrance. We could hear the sound of assault from inside the prison,” she said.
