RAKHINE STATE – According to a report released by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) on November 7, more than two million people in Rakhine State may face famine in 2025 due to the intense fighting in Rakhine State and the blocking of trade routes by the terrorist junta army.
According to the data collected by UNDP, between 2023 and 2024, restricting the entry of international goods into Rakhine State, no income, inflation, significant decline in domestic product and essential services, lack of social security networks, resulting in the Rakhine people, who have been suffering hardship since the beginning, may face a worse situation in the coming months.
It was estimated that domestic food production will only be able to cover 20 % of the state’s food needs by March and April 2025, and as all internal and external trade is almost stopped, 95 % of the state’s population may be at risk, UNDP pointed out.
UNDP has called on access to goods in Rakhine State, all the current restrictions should be lifted and commerce and goods flow in Rakhine State should be improved, all relevant organizations to ensure the free access of aid workers and their safety.
According to the data collected by UNDP, at least three hundred and seventy thousand tons of rice (372,000) are needed in 2025, in order to ensure food security in Rakhine State.
