BAGO DIVISION – The junta council abducted 50 year old Mr. Zaw Htay from Mudu Village in Kawa Township on accusations of having links to the People’s Defence Force (PDF) then tortured him to death, reported acquaintances of the deceased victim.
Mr. Zaw Htay was abducted by junta council troops on April 27 and was detained and tortured at the interrogation camp for months. He was then reported to have died on December 18 from the wounds sustained during the torture.
“Mr. Zaw Htay was taken away by junta soldiers back in April. His family couldn’t contact him since then and had no idea whether he was alive or dead or where he was detained. On December 19, junta soldiers informed the family that he had died in Bago Hospital. The family members went to the hospital to collect his body but the soldiers didn’t return it to them. The funeral rites will be held in the village,” said a resident.
It is said that clerk Wah Wah Khaing from Kawa Township General Administration Department was the main instigator behind the arrest, torture and death of Mr. Zaw Htay as she falsely accused him of being a political activist with connection to the PDF, leading to him being tortured for months in the interrogation camp.
“He was sent to the hospital on December 18 and died that night. He was already near death when he arrived at the hospital. There were bruises all over his body. He must have been brutally beaten up during interrogation. It was too late by the time he arrived at the hospital,” said a source close to Bago Hospital.
The terrorist junta council allowed the family of Mr. Zaw Htay who they tortured to death to view the body at the hospital but did not return the body to the family, burying it themselves. The family was banned from taking photos of the dead body.
Mr. Zaw Htay, tortured to death by the junta terrorists, left behind a wife and three children.
