KACHIN STATE – The Kachin Independence Army (KIA) launched an attack on the junta headquarters in Myitkyina on Saturday morning (August 26), according to sources from KIA Frontline and local residents.
“It’s true; KIA initiated the attack by firing small weapons at the junta headquarters,” a source confirmed. Subsequently, the junta soldiers responded by indiscriminately firing heavy artillery shells.
Just a few hours ago, residents reported hearing heavy artillery bombardment. “We could hear the sound of heavy artillery shells being fired. The ground shook due to the impact,” said a resident.
“The junta soldiers are likely stationed around Patmati, possibly at the entrance of Myitkyina. The ground at Du Ka Htaung shook due to the artillery barrage. Additionally, the concrete buildings and roofs in No. 5 Residential Wards of Wine Maw, adjacent to Myitkyina, were also affected.”
“Wine Maw and Myitkyina are separated by a river. Over five artillery shells were fired. At first, we thought it might be lightning due to the rain,” she added.
Residents are concerned about the junta’s artillery shellings, and casualties remain unknown.
