SHAN STATE – The Karenni National Defense Force (KNDF) said it will investigate the case of fraudsters using the group’s logo and asking for money.
KNDF issued an official statement on May11 after an invoice bearing the KNDF logo was found on a social media page, purporting to be sent to a business family in Hsenwi. In the mentioned threatening letter, it is said that the donation was asked to obtain weapons and ammunition for the KNDF and the family of Ho Heinkham goldsmith in Hsenwi will have to pay 6 million kyats.
In addition, if the payment is not made on time, there are threats such as that the family members, including children, will be arrested by force, and that their lives will not be guaranteed.
KNDF explained there’s no movement of military or engagements in Hsenwi area.
In addition, the attached letter was not written and sent by KNDF at all, and extorting money from the public against KNDF troops is strictly prohibited by KNDF policy. “According to KNDF’s principles and ethics, we will never break the rules when dealing with the public. Doing this is defamation,” a KNDF official told.
Therefore, KNDF urges the public to be aware of fraudsters misusing KNDF’s name and extorting money with fake letters and to report to them if they encounter similar incidents. In addition, KNDF informs that it will continue to investigate the incident and take action.
