SAGAING DIVISION – The NUG Ministry of Defence has confirmed that it has captured Shwe Pyi Aye City in Homalin Township, Sagaing Division, which is a key city for Chindwin River transportation, after a two-day battle.
It is said that the attack on Shwe Pyi Aye, which is about 20 miles south of Homalin, on the banks of the Chindwin River, had begun on November 21 and was captured the next day.
After the NUG Ministry of Defence announced on November 29 morning that the city was captured, Homalin PDF released video footage of the city takeover battle through Facebook.
The video recording was reported to be a video file of the PDF attacking to seize the last defensive hill of the junta council in Shwe Pyi Aye.
“The enemy is running from the last line of defence with two speedboats,” said the PDF soldier who shot the video.
According to the video file, it was seen that the PDF troops were able to enter the military council camp, which was strongly surrounded by a double-layered fence and dug trenches, and the sounds of shooting could be heard.
The NUG Ministry of Defence released pictures on November 28 evening saying that eight members of the military council were captured and nearly 30 small arms were seized during the city capture battle.
It is said that Shwe Pyi Aye is a hub on the Chindwin River waterway and is a stopover for cargo ships and timber ships.
The junta council army and the Shan National Army (SNA) were stationed jointly in Shwe Pyi Aye, between Phaung Pyin and Homalin.
The military council is silent about the situation in Shwe Pyi Aye. A spokesman for SNA denied reports that PDF forces had taken control of the city, saying the fighting was still going on.
Shwe Pyi Aye was a large village by the Chindwin River and was designated as a city during the previous military regime.
In February of last year, revolutionary forces attacked Shwe Pyi Aye and managed to control the town for several days, but when the military council counterattacked, they had to retreat from the town.
