ASEAN – On October 17, APHR, a group of ASEAN parliamentarians on human rights, said that they have no confidence in the military council’s peace talks that are targeting civilians.
ASEAN MPs responded to the military council’s celebration of the 8th anniversary of the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA) in Nay Pyi Taw, which was held on the morning of October 15th. Just holding such a ceremony is not enough to prove that the military council wants peace, so the international community should not be under any illusions.
A few days before this ceremony, the military council army attacked a war-affected refugee camp in Kachin state from the air, APHR said.
APHR also expressed disappointment that the Thai Deputy Foreign Minister attended the military council’s peace talks.
Three of the 10 NCA signatories, the KNU, ABSDF, and CNF, have officially announced that the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA) is void.
On the one hand, the military council is talking about peace, but on the other hand, it is carrying out barbaric actions such as arbitrary arrests, shootings, killings, and aerial bombardments across the country, including ethnic areas.
