MYANMAR – The Data For Myanmar reported that within more than two years of the coup from May 1, 2021 to May 31, 2023, a total of 70,324 homes were destroyed nationwide.
Except for Ayeyarwaddy Division, the junta troops and its affiliates burned down the civilian homes in all other States and Divisions. Sagaing Division recorded the highest loss where 53,816 houses were torched, followed by Magway Division where 10,451 houses were destroyed in junta arson attacks.
Data For Myanmar reports the monthly data of arson attacks by the junta council nationwide, starting from May 2021, collected by each State, District, Township, and Village. The number of households was enumerated and recorded. Data For Myanmar also marked the location of the villages where junta soldiers and their affiliates committed the crimes with Latitude and Longitude systems to be accurately described.
Following Sagaing and Magway, 1,637 houses from Chin State, 1,378 from Kachin State, 1,206 from Mandalay, 640 from Tanintharyi, 421 from Karenni State, 229 from Mon State, 13 houses from Rakhine State, 187 houses from Southern Shan State and 4 from Northern Shan State, 154 from Karen State, 132 from eastern Bago Division and 55 from western Bago and 1 house in Yangon Division were burned down by the military group.
Just last Tuesday (on June 13), more than 600 houses were destroyed due to the arson attacks on Tharzin Village in Sartaung Township, Sagaing Division by junta troops. Sagaing District Medical Team announced that there is an urgent need for assistance for the people fleeing the war. The military troops are still torching the houses in Tharzin Village until the next day, June 14, stated the locals.
