SAGAING DIVISION – The Monywa People’s Strike Battle Steering Committee informed on December 15 that the political prisoners detained in Monywa Prison are being tortured by the prison officials.
He said that the newly transferred officer in charge of the prison and the administration officer were mistreating political prisoners.
When they failed to greet the officers entering the dormitory, the prisoners were forced to sit outside and were subject to verbal abuse. The Monywa People’s Strike Battle Steering Committee said that the prisoners’ beds, blankets and clothes were stepped on with shoes when the prison authorities entered the dormitory.
The notification of the Monywa People’s Strike Battle Steering Committee stated that political prisoners who went to meet with the prison officer and head officer and requested not to do these actions were called to the warden’s office and beaten.
It is reported that the prison authorities have also threatened Mr. Wai Moe Naing, the leader of the Monywa strike, who is incarcerated in Monywa Prison.
The Monywa People’s Strike Battle Steering Committee said that since Prison Officer Zaw Myint Oo took charge, in addition to the torture of the inmates, the prison staff also scolded the family members who sent items to the prison.
Well-known political prisoners who opposed the military coup are held in Monywa Prison.
Last September, nearly 50 political prisoners went on a hunger strike at Monywa Prison for the rights of prisoners. The prison authorities initially gave in to the demands of the protest, but after more than a month, those who participated in the protest were punished by cancelling their reduced prison terms and additions to the section were made.
