RAKHINE STATE – Due to Cyclone Mocha, many townships in Rakhine State faced damaged houses and trees falling over but local sources said that no casualties have been reported.
After the storm, houses in Sittwe, Taung Kok, Min Pyar, Kyauk Taw, Myauk U, Ponnagyun, Thandwe, Maungdaw Townships and surrounding areas were damaged and there were also reports of fallen trees, according to residents and local media. There may also be damages in Myebon and Pauktaw Townships and the local residents in that area cannot be contacted.
“At the moment, I can’t connect to the internet. MPT and Telenor phone lines are out of service except Mytel SIM,” said a resident of Minpya, explaining the situation of communication lines being cut due to the storm.
A local resident of Minpya said that although pylons and trees fell down and houses were damaged, there were no casualties.
“There are no casualties in the city. We haven’t received any news from the countryside. Country side areas are more likely to face casualties as it is close to the sea,” said the resident of Minpya.
It is said that before the storm, the residents had been fleeing to safe places since May 14.
A resident of Sittwe also informed that although there are many damages in Sittwe, no death have been reported.
On May 15, after the storm, some local residents and some local news reported the damage in Sittwe.
