KACHIN STATE – After protests broke out in Myitkyina Prison, junta forces raided the prison and there were gunshots fired, according to local people and sources within the prison department.
The protesting chants from the prisoners in Myitkyina Prison could be heard at around 4 p.m. on April 18 however, it was not clear what the shouts were about. Military vehicles then entered the prison and local people reported hearing between at least over 20 and over 50 gunshots after that.
Sources within the prison department confirmed the protests in Myitkyina Prison and the gunshots but weren’t able to share the details of the incident.
“There were sounds of protests at Myitkyina Prison since the afternoon. Then the army entered (the prison) and there were like 50 – 100 gunshots. Soldiers are standing guard in the dark there were ambulances going in and out, as well as military cars. There were around five ambulances,” said a local resident.
