MYANMAR – The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Myanmar, Mr. Tom Andrews, said on Wednesday (December 6) that it is imperative to stop the Myanmar junta’s access to weapons.
The UN Special Rapporteur warned that now is an important time to rescue the lives of Myanmar citizens and to immediately put a stop to the junta council’s access to weapons.
He said that the Myanmar junta council is repeatedly committing war crimes and crimes against humanity against the people of Myanmar and that these crimes will only be stopped if the junta council can no longer has access to weapons.
Mr. Andrews also urged the international community take immediate action to block the junta council’s access to weapons.
“The ongoing conflict in Myanmar is unlike any other conflict. It is imperative that the UN member states put an immediate stop to the flow of weapons to the military dictators who are quickly losing territory. Now is the time to consider this and take action,” urged Mr. Tom Andrews.
The UN Special Rapporteur added that time is of importance as the junta council’s air and artillery strikes had displaced a quarter million people in Myanmar just this week.
He also continued that it is mainly needed to block the jet fuel supply of the junta council as the junta regime is using jets and military choppers to carry out air strikes on IDP camps, schools and hospitals.
