TANINTHARYI DIVISION – According to the locals, military council troops arrested and extorted persons who were organising the Qurbani Eid Mubarak in Myeik Township.
Residents said that at least five people from Kangaung Ward, Zaytan Ward, and Parami Ward, where Qurbani was made, were arrested and extorted money.
“They took them away on the pretext that the cow was not slaughtered in the mosque, but in the courtyard of the house. Those who brought the cows home and killed them there, because there were too many cows in the mosque and the place was crowded, were arrested,” said a Muslim man.
Residents close to the arrested said that they were fined between 2 lakhs and 3 lakhs after being arrested by military council forces.
“You can kill (the cows) within three days of Eid. Some people do it in mosques and some people do it in their home yards. This is a yearly routine,” said another Muslim man.
During Eid al-Adha by Muslims, livestock are slaughtered according to religious regulations and donated to the poor by religious Muslims all over the world.
