AYEYARWADDY DIVISION – At 9:00 a.m. on May 5, about 30 junta forces came and destroyed the township NLD party office in Za Lun.
The members of the party said that they blocked the street where the party office is located, broke the locks on the office fence, and destroyed the office.
“The street was blocked on both ends first. Then they broke the locks on the office fence. The staff of the ministry of information recorded the scene. They then smashed the flagpoles, and tore the NLD sign into pieces, then broke the office door and entered. We don’t know what they destroyed inside,” said one NLD member.
Officials from the Za Lun NLD office have been on the run after the military coup to escape arrest by the junta council and the office was locked. The destruction and looting of office properties are not known exactly. Only the destruction of the flag pole and sign board were confirmed.
Those who vandalized the NLD office reportedly included fire fighters, municipal staff, general administration staff and ministry of information staff. In addition to them, about 20 police officers, including two deputy superintendents, armed with knives and spikes came and destroyed the office, said witnesses.
In some townships in Ayeyarwaddy Division, there have been reports of the ward administration teams being notified to take down the NLD signs and shut down the offices because the party is no longer legal.
On May 1, in Pathein, junta council forces in civilian disguise came and took down the sign board of the NLD party office in Ward No. 2, and seized the phone of a citizen who took a picture of the incident.
