MANDALAY DIVISION – It is known from sources close to the prison that the political prisoners are being unlawfully tortured by the junta council and the prison staff at Myingyan Prison in Mandalay Division. The prisoners are said to be forcefully called out to the interrogation center outside the prison and brutally tortured but are not allowed medical care. In addition, it is also reported that the delivery of care packages and medicine from outside the prison is also restricted.
On June 8, the General Strike Coordination Body (GSCB) announced that eleven political prisoners from Myingyan Prison were unlawfully moved to the junta light infantry battalion 15 base and physically assaulted. 70 other political prisoners were also reportedly called out to the office of the prison warden and were beaten without reason.
“According to the latest updates, they (political prisoners) have been frequently brought out and beaten up. They are only allowed to go outside during shower time. As he could also be interrogated and tortured, I was worried and tried to send him medicine, but was not allowed,” said a family member of an unjustly detained political prisoner from Myingyan Prison.
The political prisoners who were unjustly called out to junta LIB 15 have been brutally beaten until they have serious injuries in their whole body and had their teeth broken. However they were not allowed to receive medical treatment and in protest to that, the political prisoners in the prison went on hunger strike starting May 22.
It is known that at this moment, there are over 200 political prisoners from Taung Tar, Monywa, and Mandalay, including Dr. Myint Naing, the Minister of Sagaing Division during the NLD government term detained at Myingyan Prison that has cut off all contacts with the outside to prevent news leak.
