YANGON DIVISION – Yangon residents reported that the junta appointed administration officers have been pressuring them to fly the national flag in front of homes on upcoming Independence Day, threatening that those who fail to comply will be fined.
“They told us that there will be a fine of 50,000 Kyats if we don’t have a flag on Independence Day. They also added that they (administration officers and hundred households chief) will be inspecting on that day,” said a resident of South Okkalarpa Township.
A resident of Insein Township also informed that they were told to buy flags at the ward administration office. “We have to buy a flag for 3,500 Kyats and we’re told that there will be a fine if we didn’t have a flag (on Independence Day).”
January 4, 2024 marks the 76th Independence Day of Myanmar.
Since the military coup by the junta council of February 1, 2021, there have been battles all over the country with the junta regime suffering defeats especially in Shan (north), Rakhine and Karenni States.
