MON STATE – The family members and close friends of political detainees reported that there are many cases of oppression, extortions and even sneaking in and selling illegal drugs within Kyaikmaraw Central Prison, Mon State.
Deputy Corporal Zaw San, in charge of the prison admissions department at the Kyaikmaraw Central Prison, along with other staff members of the department, spoke rudely to the families of political prisoners and reportedly asked for bribes. He will ban those who refused to pay from visiting or sending parcels to the prisoner.
Moreover, Deputy Corporal Zaw San and other prison staff are pressuring to restrict the prison services (receiving letters and parcels from families) for allegedly sneaking in drugs and illegal items into prison through the processes. But in reality, they are the ones who smuggle and distribute drugs and illegal items in prison, according to people close to Kyaikmaraw Central Prison.
Prisoners are also forced to buy products at the market opened by the prison guards at the price twice as much as the outside market price, stated a person close to the families of detainees.
