MON STATE – Two residents captured by the junta council in Thanphyuzayat Township of Mon State had passed away after being tortured at the interrogation center, according to local residents and sources close to the junta council.
After the junta forces caught Mr. Mya Than from Aungzeya (expansion) Ward in Thanphyuzayat Town on November 30 with a pistol, they proceeded to arbitrarily detain at least 50 more civilians.
Among them, Mr. Mya Than and Mr. Min were reportedly physically tortured to death at Naewaekali interrogation center in the junta council’s Thanphyuzayat base before December 10.
The junta council did not inform the family members of their deaths nor returned the dead bodies, secretly destroying them instead, said sources close to the junta council.
People taken away by the junta council on accusations of being related to the People’s Defence Forces (PDF) include business owners and gold traders in Thanphyuzayat.
As the junta council has denied them family visits, their family members are concerned about their wellbeing, revealed acquaintances of the families.
The properties of Mr. Tayote, the owner of Haymawun construction materials and one of those detained by the junta council, were sealed off on December 1, said the residents.
Currently, the junta council is preparing to prosecute the detainees under the Terrorism Act for their alleged association with PDF, according to sources close to the junta council.
As per data compiled by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP), there have been at least 70 civilians murdered by the junta council in Mon State after the military coup.
